Marlin Ministry
What is Marlin
The name of the ministry is Marlin because we used to travel to Marlin, Texas where the Texas Youth Commission (TYC) was located. At Marlin all of the youth in the facility sentenced were there for about 6 weeks for orientation. Then after the 6 weeks each one would be sent off to a more permanent facility to finish out their time. The imprisoned youth we got to visit were usually a mixture of about 40 girls and guys and their reward for good behavior was getting to come to our visit. As of 2007 the Marlin facility became an all adult male institution and the orientation program was moved to a juvenile facility in Mart, Texas. Mart is about 30 miles outside of Marlin and 30 miles outside of Waco.
So now our ministry team travels to Mart, Texas with the same program and intent but at a different facility. We now get to see about 20-40 youth all male from ages 11-18 years old and they have committed all kinds of crimes. We show up with a group of our own youth with leaders and we bring them pizza, drinks and the love of Christ.
This is a great opportunity to minister grace, forgiveness and love. Youth and adults are welcomed to come along with us, youth in 7th and 8th grades need to have either a parent and/or guardian accopany them.
What to expect
You must wear jeans or pants, no open toe shoes, no shirts that would display anything inappropriate. Shirts must cover the mid-drift and the shoulder and must not be revealing. No bandannas! Dress conservative i.e. jeans, t-shirt and tennis shoes are great. Be prepared to give an i.d. such as DL# or SSN#. We usually eat out afterwards so be sure to bring money to eat fast food. Please arrive at ORBC youth room at 4:30pm and we will be back at ORBC around 12 midnight.
The facility is highly secured with correctional officers and leaders. We do encourage both male and female to come with us and we make sure that you are put with group members who have been before. We also encourage all participating to only give their first name and not any personal information other than being with Ovilla Road Baptist Church.
Expect God to do some great things even in your own life!
If you are under 18 please print out the form below and bring it signed by your parents. Also, please print the dress code document as well and make sure you abide by what is being asked or you may not be able to participate.
